According to a study by Argentum, America’s largest senior living association, the health care and social assistance sector saw a 31.6% turnover rate in 2016. This was the fifth consecutive increase since 2011, when industry turnover saw an all-time low after the Recession.

Senior care center operators have been combating turnover rates by increasing caregivers’ scheduled hours. The study found that the average number of hours worked by senior living employees increased by 4% during the first half of 2017, on top of a 2.8% increase in 2016.

While longer hours certainly close hiring gaps, long-term retention and employee morale still remain a problem. Employment experts suggest that since senior care can be a demanding industry, employers can help lighten the workload by looking at benefits and work environment.

Incentives like gift cards, education subsidis, and professional training appeal to employees who want to continue their education in the field. And work-life balance opportunities, such as customized scheduling, offer stress relief from long hours.
