Giving your employees the option to have their payroll direct deposited into their personal banking account is both a convenience and a benefit for them and for your company.
Your company does not have to worry about the added expense associated with checks being lost or stolen; while your employees receive the benefit of having their paycheck funds available to them immediately on pay day, whether they are at work or not. To ensure a smooth transition when implementing a direct deposit program and avoid potential issues when starting or changing an employee’s direct deposit, please keep the following guidelines in mind.
- ABA Routing Numbers are nine (9) digits in length.
- Routing numbers starting with the number five (5) are NOT valid and will generate a deposit return.
- Do NOT obtain the routing number from an employee’s deposit slip—please use a voided check or bank specification sheet provided by the employee.
- Financial institutions can provide an official document stating the ABA routing number and account number to be used for direct deposits (often referred to as a bank specification sheet).
- Always get documentation of the employee’s account information from the employee.
- The first two digits of the nine digit ABA number must be in the ranges 00 through 12, 21 through 32, 61 through 72, or 80.
